At the gym she was watching a news report about an epidemic, and the two ideas combined in her head to form the central concept of the Delirium trilogy. She had recently read a Gabriel Garcia Márquez essay where he said that all books were about either love or death. In a world where love has been declared a dangerous disease, The Delirium series follows Lena, who is on the verge of. Lauren Oliver says that the inspiration for Delirium came to her one day at the gym. Everyone is supposed to get the cure when they turn eighteen and then they are matched with a partner through an evaluation.

It is set in a dystopian world where love is considered a disease called Amor Deliria Nervosa, but scientists have invented a cure for it. The Delirium Trilogy is a YA fiction series by Lauren Oliver.
